Sean Uyehara hung out with us in Sundance and saw the layers upon layers upon layers of my EMPAC project out there so very quickly. He wrote this thing up for Fandor: http://www.fandor.com/blog/?p=11074

Incidentally, Fandor just put some of my short films on their site. They’re kind of a curated version of Netflix, only they cost less, have better films- tons and tons of incredible short films- All of Phil Mulloy’s short films. Phil Mulloy is fucking incredible. And you can see his films on Fandor. That’s what I was aiming to say.

Barcelona! Miami! New Work! Good old exhaustion!

I’m pretty thrilled that Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then won the grand prize/best fiction feature at L’Alternativa in Barcelona, Spain! Every single film in competition looked gorgeous- any of them could have won. I’m feeling lucky they picked Gravity.

There’s the Miami art fair business, too. Andrew Edlin Gallery is showing an excerpt of my new film/sculpture To Many Men Strange Fates Are Given (made with Eric Ameres, Ryan Jenkins and the rest of the EMPAC team) at the Pulse Art Fair. There’s a big version of the sculpture (premiering at Sundance in January) and a more manageable version- he’ll have the more manageable version on hand.

Well. It’s much more complicated than this. Much more. But this thing is premiering at Sundance 2012 this January.

I built it at EMPAC in Troy, NY with Eric Ameres, Ryan Jenkins and Donna K (with additional help from Mick Bello, Zackary Belanger and Bill Bergman). It doesn’t look anything like it looked when we made that video. Right now it looks like this:

First off, here’s an interview with John Swartz. He plays cello with us, and is an absolutely brilliant photographer. He’s also a weirdo. He sits in the very back of the van. July 1-3- Gravity is screening at Fest Anca in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. It’s an animation festival, and it seems like most animators are hard up. This site features a toothed vagina with clitoris eyeball.

We’re going to Australia!!! Doing a the Gravity live show at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival on July 17th. This fest is going to be amazing. I think Tony Conrad’s going to be there. I know Marie Losier’s film, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, will be.

We’re leaving Mike McGinley (and Holli McGinley) in Australia, and Donna K, John Swartz, Drew Henkels and I are heading to Europe for a few more live Gravity shows.

May was awesome!! Gravity won the jury prize at the Bildrausch Basel Film Fest! The Louisville Gravity exhibit is up and bee-yoo-ti-full! Coming down at the end of this month.

And this: I just stumbled across this Focus Features blog promoting Jane Eyre, about 10 scary house movies and they talk about Gravity as the DIY scary house movie! Focus was my favorite production house before anyway (Burn After Reading, A Serious Man, Coraline, Broken Flowers, etc.), but, c’mon… that’s crazy. Just one more example of how we live in a time when you can make a film in your backyard and, if you’re lucky, have all kinds of people all over the entire world see it.

Gravity is screening at the AnimaFest Zagreb in Croatia, June 1-6

June 9th We’re doing a live show in Memphis, TN at the Brooks Museum. Brendan Canty, Drew Henkels, John Swartz, Donna K and I. We’re not doing too many more of these shows, and the film is sold as a very limited edition (5 copies total) as a fine artwork. If you’re around Tennessee and you haven’t seen the film, and you want to see the film, it’s worth the trip. The band is pretty great.

Oh, OK. Here goes. We’re building up the Gravity set again. This time at LOT in Louisville! The show’s being brought around by Art Without Walls, a pretty spectacular organization putting up great public art all over town. Other AWW shows coinciding with ours are a Chris Doyle public projection piece and EV Day’s Diva’s Ascending. Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then opens on May 13th

Gravity just wrapped up an awesome few screenings at BAFICI in Buenos Aires.
And is about to screen at:
Hot Docs in Toronto April 28-May 8
Plastic Paper, Winnipeg (Gravity is the opening night film!) May 4
Indie Lisboa in Portugal (with Brent in attendance) May 5-15
FilmFest Basel (Brent’s going to this one, too!!) May 26-June 1 I like their program notes- Gravity is described as “Frank Capra without a happy ending.” Hell yeah.

While we’re in Basel screening Gravity, Brent, Howe Gelb, Jim White (of the Dirty Three) and Donna K are going to perform a couple shows- one at the Kunsthalle Basel on May 30- called A Head Full of Dying Crows- performing live soundtracks to Brent’s short films. And the other at El Lokal in Zurich on May 31, which is more of a Howe Gelb solo show- but with Jim and Brent doing some talking and singing, too.

That takes us to the end of May. June’s crazy, too. Live shows in Memphis and Louisville. Screenings in Croatia and Germany. Much much more.
